About Mwea Classic Marathon

M

wea Classic Marathon is a community marathon held annually in Mwea, Kirinyaga County. It is one of the Annual Races in the Athletics Kenya (AK) calendar. Initiated in the year 2008, Mwea Classic Marathon has been held every year since; except for 2004. The 2018 edition that will be held on July 21st 2018 will mark the 10th anniversary.

The Race

Mwea Classic Marathon is among the fastest growing road races in Kenya, largely due to its flat and beautiful race route, snaking through the rice paddies in Mwea. With an average temperature of 21degrees, Mwea’s tropical climate is the perfect atmosphere for marathon lovers, spectators and professionals.

In the first 10km of the half marathon race, runners are treated to a traffic free, flat route, as they run along the footpaths and cycle tracks of the great Mwea Rice Irrigation scheme. All around the route is a vast green vegetation of the rice crop in its young stages and apart from occasional interruption of birds, the serenity of the route is a sight to behold for marathon lovers. The last 10km includes a traffic controlled main road run along the Embu-Mwea highway, and a view of Mwea Town as the route takes a final bend to the finish at the Wanguru Stadium.

The 10km course provides a fantastic opportunity to see a bit of the rice paddies as well with the same stretch through the Embu-Mwea highway and a community treat to the many spectators lined up at the ever active Mwea Town. 5km family fun run adds to the excitement of the day. Participants of the 21KM race are treated to a great commemorative medal and with a T-shirt to keep, while the winners receive a cash prize

This is a race not to miss!

The 2018 Event

This year’s event will be held on 21st July 2018 at Wanguru Stadium starting at 7.00am.

The great entertainment, outstanding crowd support and a glorious finish, we organize a whole day family event at Wanguru stadium where sponsors, spectators and the Mwea Community meet for a fun filled event.

Community Outreach

Apart from the professional runners, Mwea Classic Marathon hosts thousands of local runners, corporates and fun groups who choose to make their experience more meaningful by running for charity.

Through the help of various sponsors, the local community and partners, the funds raised are used to organize the marathon, inspire the youthful generation in Mwea and supporting education programmes in the area.

This year, we are running for a plate of food –together with the leadership of Mwea, we are running to make sure that the free universal education in Mwea is not interrupted by lack of food by the many needy students.

Why the Mwea Classic Marathon??

The main objective of the event is to empower the youth to enable them make their rightful share of contribution to the society.

For an African youth, all days are the same and without motivation he wonders what his mission in life is. To make a difference, the Mwea classic marathon was inaugurated on 12th September, 2009 at Mwea Boys secondary school. There is hope for the world and the young are part of it. Last year the event attracted over 1800 runners for 10km and 21km respectively.
